After hearing about the new colourful French painting from his brother Theo, Vincent went to live in Paris in 1886. He soon tried out the French style on a number of self-portraits. He did this mainly to save the costs for a model. Here he painted himself as a mundanely dressed Parisian, with loose, rhythmic brushstrokes in striking colours.
